About Carolyn Tripp
 
A life changing event three years ago was the catalyst for a complete change in direction for me and a desire to commit to a career making work that reflected my own personal journey.
 
All of my ceramic pieces are hand thrown by me in my studio at Wimbledon Art Studios. I like to create shapes dictated by the feel of the porcelain clay I use and am captivated by the bottle shape in particular. Despite its idiosyncrasies and difficulties, l am drawn to porcelain, working with it is a joy. It’s fluidity and elasticity on the wheel keeps me energized and able to create each one of my individual pieces of work. 
 
I couldn’t help but take in my mother’s love of blue and white china (I now have her small but treasured collection). Inspired by this aesthetic, my own decoration uses hand screen printed designs which tell stories from my life, past and present, significant and banal.  It is abstracted story- telling in porcelain. Borrowing traditional shapes from historic pieces and applying an updated and evolving tissue transfer technique, I tear and rearrange my autobiographical words and images as I apply them to the surface of my ceramics.  This creates an abstract decoration, so creating new meaning. Seeking to give each piece its own identity, I mix patterns and glazes to create work that displays individuality even when grouped collectively.
